They are also known as rubber bungs, and rubber stoppers which are used to seal bottles, tubes, and many other containers. They plug containers from the outside without displacing the volume inside. Some more resistant stoppers can also be used for heavy industrial processes.

Rubber stoppers are used to seal bottles, tubes and other containers so that their contents do not spill outside the container. At the same time they ensure that the outside air or atmosphere does not contaminate the contents of the container.

The most widely used rubber in pharmaceutical packaging are butyl, Bromobutyl, and Chlorobutyl rubbers. Nitrile and neoprene rubbers are used for applications where oil resistance and high temperature resistance is required. Natural rubber is sometimes used for multidose injections. Silicon rubbers which have a high degree of inertness are mainly used for Opthalmic and contact lens solution applications.

The primary role of rubber closure in pharmaceutical packaging is to provide an inert barrier between the contents of the vial and the outside ambient atmosphere. The closure has to be inert so that it does not react with the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient or the preservative. It should also not leach out any particles inside the vial and contaminate it during the entire period of storage. It is also important that it does not allow water vapour and other gases present in the outside air to enter the vial ,thereby maintaining the potency and efficacy of the medication . It should not shed any particles when the injectable needle penetrates it at the time of administration of injection.

The range of standard rubber bungs includes that made from butyl and Halobutyl rubbers. Besides these, bungs made of nitrile, neoprene, natural rubber, and silicon rubber are also available as standard products for specialized applications.
